Olympic Food Challenge no 17 Gabon- Baked bananas

Gabon is a sovereign state on the west coast of Central Africa. It is bordered by Equatorial Guinea to the northwest, Cameroon (another one of my challenge countries) to the north, the Republic of the Congo on the east and south, and the Atlantic Ocean’s Gulf of Guinea to the west.

During the challenge I have had to try some new and different dishes but nothing has filled me with such fear as this dish as I have a irrational fear of bananas. I hate the taste, smell, look, everything !

Anyway this dish did not seem too bad, and by all accounts is very popular in Gabon.

Well I tried my best and all I could muster was one mouthful. This was not helped by the other half (a normal banana lover) pulling a funny and then running to the bin.

Well anyway, if you would like to have a go the recipe is below.

As for us, this dish won’t be repeated.

Ingredients:
8 bananas cut into three equal diagonal pieces
1 egg, lightly beaten
2 tbsp orange juice
100g breadcrumbs
120ml vegetable oil

To serve
sour cream and brown sugar

Method

Beat the egg with the orange juice and dip the bananas in this before rolling in the breacrubms.

Heat the vegetable oil in a frying pan and fry the bananas in this until they begin to brown lightly.

Transfer to a baking sheet and place in an oven pre-heated to 170°C for 5 minutes.

Serve 1 banana per person, topped with 3 tbsp sour cream and sprinkled with brown sugar.
